KU Press Release

Click here to see the KU Press Release about the Morton Gould award. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a KU student has won one, but unfortunately we couldn’t confirm it with ASCAP, so it’s not mentioned here…

A.B.D.

The three nicest little letters in the English language right now: A.B.D., a.k.a. All But Dissertation. In other words, I’ve passed written and oral comprehensive exams! Praise the Lord! I even received a “Pass, with Honors” distinction for the orals.
My orals weren’t as difficult as I thought they’d be. The only questions I didn’t know were Aristoxenus (spelling?) and being able to name a composer of Baroque concerto grossi between Gabrieli and Corelli. The good news was, my musicology professor couldn’t remember the name of the guy either.

Now, at last, I can start tackling the massive to-do list that has been accumulating for the last few months as I’ve been so preoccupied with written comps and orals!

ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award

Exciting news: I won a 2006 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award for selected movements of Words From Paradise. I never dreamed this would happen, after several years of entering and not getting anything. This is the new “biggest award I’ve ever won”!!

I think the prize involves a cash award, a trip to NYC for the awards banquet, publicity in ASCAP publications, posters, website, etc, and a free copy of Sibelius. (As upset as Brian Bondari and I have been at Finale these days, I’m looking forward to trying it!!)

The interesting thing is, I had been advised (from a good friend and knowledgeable source) to enter my trombone sonata since “sacred choral pieces don’t normally win” in this contest. I had planned to do so, but in the end, I just couldn’t do it- I really felt like I ought to enter Words From Paradise. Praise the Lord! This is His doing, and it’s marvelous in our eyes.

The press release for this year’s contest isn’t out yet, but info about the contest can be found here.
